C is for Cookie… But are Cookies for Me?

What is an internet cookie?

According to Internet for Dummies, “A cookie is a tiny little file that’s stored on your computer. It contains the address of the Web site and codes that your browser sends back to the Web site each time you visit a page there. Cookies don’t usually contain personal information or anything dangerous; they’re usually innocuous and useful.”

Privacy- 3rd parties are accessing what you click on

Secrecy- Can be blocked but difficult to do

Security-Cookie securities are a large problem

Filters – Cookies drive the kinds of sites you see
(they pick up on your preferences & direct you there
rather than to opposing views)

Speed – Too many cookies bog down your system.
That’s why it’s a good idea to clear them frequently.
It’s also one of the reasons the district uses Deep Freeze.

When you restart, the cookies are gone (thanks Kurt and Mike!)

Convenience- Remember forms fields you have
filled out (address etc)

Personalization-Great for connecting to products
of your preference

Effective Advertising– connects to products
relevant to you.

Ease of Control– Most browsers make it easy to
clear cookies.
